LA protests live updates: Curfew in effect for parts of downtown Los Angeles
The curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Tensions are escalating for a fifth day in Los Angeles after protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement gripped the city, with demonstrators clashing with law enforcement and setting vehicles on fire downtown.
President Donald Trump has deployed 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to LA. But California Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta are suing the Trump administration, saying they unlawfully "trampled over" California’s sovereignty when they federalized the California National Guard.
Across the country, marchers similarly took to the streets in New York City in an anti-ICE protest that began in Foley Square, across from where immigration enforcement operations have been centered. Protests have have also been seen in San Francisco, Boston, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta and more.
Curfew for downtown LA now in effect
A curfew for downtown Los Angeles is now in effect. It began at 8 p.m. local time and will last until 6 a.m.
The curfew applies to an area about one square mile in downtown LA, which has been the site of clashes between police and protesters over the past several days.
Earlier, police said they had arrested just under 200 people, so far, on Tuesday.
